16:46 CST October 28, 2016 – While taking off from runway 28R at Chicago O’Hare (ORD), American Airlines flight 383 to Miami blew a tire causing a fire. The tire fragments caught the right engine on fire casing a massive cloud of black smoke. Emergency crews reached the aircraft very quickly and were able to contain and extinguish the fire in a short amount of time.

The specific cause of the fire has yet to be officially determined and will need to the investigated by the NTSB.

The passengers and crew evacuated from the plane on the left side via the emergency slides. AA reported 8 pax and 1 crew member suffered minor injuries and were taken to area hospitals for evaluation. There were a total of 170 people onboard, 161 of which were passengers.

The aircraft was a Boeing 767-300ER (N345AN)delivered to American in 2003.

Operations have resumed on the other runways of O’Hare, but runway 28R will remain closed causing some delays.
