The U.S. Navy has awarded a $2.4 billion contract to Boeing for an additional 19 Boeing P-8A Poseidon aircraft. Out of the nineteen aircraft to be built, 10 will be for the U.S. Navy fleet.
Through the Foreign Military Sales process, the remaining nine aircraft will be acquired by the United Kingdom and Norway. The U.K. will be receiving four aircraft starting in 2019 while Norway will begin to receive their five aircraft in 2021. Foreign Military Sales, also known as “FMS,” is a program for the United States to sell and transfer defense supplies to foreign governments.
The Boeing P-8A Poseidon is a military aircraft derived from the Boeing 737-800ERX, which features a -800 fuselage with -900 wings. Modifications for the aircraft include a stronger fuselage as well as rake wingtips featured on the 767-400ER. Designed to replace the Lockheed P-3 Orion, the P-8A Poseidon fulfills the role of long-range maritime patrol with tasks such as anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, intelligence, humanitarian, as well as search and rescue missions.
