What to expect from Boeing in 2017

With the year coming to an end, it is time to look toward the future of Boeing. Boeing had a busy 2016, most recently being in full swing with the new 737 MAX 8 flight test program and delivering the 500th 787 Dreamliner. 2017 is set to hold many exciting new airplane flights and deliveries for the aerospace giant.

737 MAX 8

January 26th, 2016 saw the first flight of the latest variant in the 737 family, the 737 MAX 8. Flight testing has been going on all year in order to test all the systems and get the new model certified. Now scheduled for the first half of 2017 is the first delivery for launch customer Southwest. That will be the first delivery of the 3346 orders Boeing has gathered for the 737 MAX program as a whole.

737 MAX 9

The larger version of the 737 MAX 8, the MAX 9 is set for its first flight in 2017. The first fuselage pieces arrived at Boeing’s Renton Assembly Plant for final assembly earlier this month. The MAX 9 is most similar to the current 737-900, with the main upgrade being more efficient engines which, when paired with the updated aerodynamic design, lowers the operating costs for the airlines.

787-10

The largest and final variant of the 787 Dreamliner is well into final assembly at the Boeing facility in South Carolina, the only facility building this bigger version. Airlines will appreciate the high fuel efficacy and more seats, but except a slightly shorter range than its younger siblings. Putting all the delays in the original 787 program aside, the 787-10 is on track for its first flight in the first half of 2017.

T-X

The Boeing T-X will be the latest trainer aircraft for the U.S. Air Force. The new plane had a successful first flight this December in St. Louis. The aircraft was designed to meet the U.S. Air Force’s training requirements. The aircraft, which has a single engine and features twin tails and stadium seating,  will help instructors have a great view on their student’s ability to fly their way through training. Things to watch out for in 2017 is the first flight of the second production aircraft and continual flight testing to show off all its capabilities.
