Statring this March, Qantas will start a three month trial to introduce Samsung Gear VR headsets into their aircraft and lounges. Both the first class lounges in Sydney and Melbourne will have these headsets for testing. Select a380 first class passengers will also get to experience virtual reality.
During the testing, users can experience 360˚ tours of Qantas’ destinations, lounges, and a380 videos. Users will also be able to watch select films like those that the IFE system offers. A special treat is being able to explore Kakadu National Park in Australia’s Northern Territory from the comfort of the first class seat and/or lounge.
If this service proves popular, it will eventually be rolled out to the rest of first class and possibly business class as well. Introduction in economy and premium economy is unlikely as the space required to fully experience 360˚ views is just not available.
