Apple’s release of the Mac Book Air back in 2008 was the new beginning of a competitive race to build the world’s thinnest laptop, without the loss of speed and performance. It didn’t take long for companies, including Dell, Asus, Micrososft, Samsung, and Acer to bring their their ideas for a thin notebook to the market.
It didn’t take China long either to develop a product of their own that’s slim and well performing. The Chinese tech company Xiaomi, known for their wide range of products ranging from water filters to phones to laptops just released their new ultrabook: the Mi Notebook Air.
Most new ultrabooks are designed to be light, slim, and be used for work and school, however the Mi Notebook Air has a new feature you wouldn’t expect in a notebook meant to be easily transportable and productive.
The 13.3 inch notebook comes equipped with a nVidia GeForce 940MX chip, which allows for games & videos to perform up to four times faster than Intel onboard graphics. While many laptops use this feature to attract more customers, this makes the Mi Notebook Air stand out as its the first slim ultrabook ever to offer a dedicated graphics GPU.
While the laptop brags about it’s ultrabook GPU, the rest of the internal specs remain common throughout the race for the slimmest laptop:
- Intel Core i5 6200U (up to 2.7GHz)
- 8 GB RAM
- 256 GB SSD
- 309mm x 210.9mm x 14.8mm
- 1.28kg/2.82lbs
- 1x Type C USB
- 2x USB 3.0
- 1x HDMI
- 1x 3.5mm Audio Port (Headphones)
The laptop is made of aluminum, features a black screen border and has an advertised 9.5 hour battery life.
Xiaomi has also said they will be producing a 12.5in version of the laptop. It will feature a battery life of 11.5 hours, at the cost of less RAM, space, and processing power.
Specs of the 12.5 inch version:
- 12.9 mm thick
- 1.07kg/2.82lb
- Intel Core-M Processor
- 128 GB SSD
- 4 GB RAM
The laptop will be on sale (only in China) on August 2nd. The current retail price starts at 4999 yuan ($750) for the 13 inch edition, and 3499 yuan ($525) for the 12.5 inch edition.
