Android Wear now works with iPhones

Google announced today that Android Wear, the Google smartwatches, now work with iPhones. It will work with iPhone 5, 5c, 5s, 6, or 6 Plus running iOS 8.2+. This brings notifications, fitness tracking, and Google Now to your wrist if you don’t have an Android phone.

Right now Google only officially says that the LG Watch Urbane will work and that all new watches in the future, for example from Huawei, Asus, and Motorola, etc., will also have support out of the box. Watches other than the Urbane that are out right now and have the latest version of Android Wear installed (including the Moto 360) have a good chance of working as well, but are not officially said to work by Google.

Today’s announcement was accompanied by Google releasing the Android Wear app for iPhone users. The app, similar to the Android version, allows the user to pair a watch and tinker with some of the settings that it offers.

As of the first release, you will not be able to install third party apps. Notifications, fitness tracking, Google Now, and Google first party apps will all work though. All notifications that pop on your iPhone will pop up on the watch as well and dismissing them on your wrist will dismiss them on the phone itself as well. As Android Wear can’t tap into iOS as well as the Apple Watch can, the notifications you would normally have on your phone will go on the watch (unlike the micromanagement you can do with the Apple Watch).

This is a pretty big announcement for Google and Android Wear. For iPhone users who want to have a smartwatch, but don’t need a full experience that the Apple Watch gives, this is a great alternative. There may not be 3rd party app support or detailed settings yet, but it is still a very helpful tool for notifications and Google services. More features are sure to be added in the future.
