A Day at EAA Oshkosh AirVenture 2015

Scroll down to watch our video on Oshkosh and view some photos we took at the event.

If you follow our twitter account where we live tweet many events (@FandaGearLive), you know that some FandaGear authors were at Oshkosh AirVenture 2015. For those who never heard of this event, it is in short the biggest airshow in the world. Running for a week in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, it is run by EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association). The event brings a whopping 10,00 aircraft in and this year 550,000 visitors from 80 nations attended. The event also offers daily airshows and 2 dazzling night airshows.

This year there were many amazing aircraft both super new and super old. Some example include: the 8 engine B-52, F-22 and F-35 fighter jets, AV-8B Harrier vertical takeoff jet, Airbus a350, “FiFi” – B-25, and two Ford Tri-Motors.

Our Oshkosh Experience

The day that the FandaGear crew was at Oshkosh was Saturday July 25th. This is one of the 2 days that has the amazing night airshow. All of us that went have gone to OSH before so we planned to get as much out of the experience as possible.

Arriving in the morning, we first walked around  aircraft parked on the ground and the many vendors. Basically any company to do with aviation was present, from Garmin avionics, to Bose headsets, to Sport’s Pilot Shop, and hundreds more. The aircraft parked are dived based on category; Seaplane, Homebuilt, Vintage, Show Plane, Warbirds, and General Aviation.

At 2:30pm, the fun really began. The start of the afternoon airshow that lasted until 6pm. The first big part of the show was a reenactment of the battles in the Pacific, from the bombing of Pearl Harbor to the dropping of the atomic bomb. This was accompanied by pyro technics that made it seam like bombs were being dropped and were going off. Next, there were all the aerobatic acts from many famous performers like Sean D. Tucker and Patty Wagstaff, just to name two. Lastly, the F-22 Raptor did an amazing display of its speed as the worlds most advanced fighter jet.

After two hours of rest and a chance to explore more exhibitors on the ground, it was time for the night airshow! The night airshow is a totally different experience. After the Harrier, F-100, Goodyear Wingfoot One, and parachuters performed, it started to get dark. A bunch of performers from the earlier show and some new airplanes took to the skies. What was different is that the planes now had many lights, roman candles, and pyrotechnics on them. This looks simply beautiful in the night sky (Be sure to watch the video below to get a sample of this experience). Toward the end, a massive fireworks display was put on. Choreographed to music, this display is one of the most amazing we have ever seen. Last, but certainly not least, was the the famous Great Wall of Fire. The Tora! Tora! Tora! pyro team lit up a wall of fire along the whole length of the runway. This created a lot of light and heat you can feel from the audience (Also in the video below).

In conclusion, EAA AirVenture is an amazing event that any aviation geek or even a small enthusiast will enjoy. The airshows are breathtaking and there are many opportunities to get into aviation. We didn’t even mention the helicopter and airplane rides available and access to the EAA museum. We here at FandaGear certainly enjoyed it and have created the video below to show the many things you can experience at the show.
