Facebook “Aquila” Solar Drone First Flight

Facebook has been working hard on making their dream of internet for all a reality. The first step in achieving this goal was Aquila.

Aquila is a solar-powered drone, and Facebook’s engineering pulled off an amazing flying machine that brings the social network giant closer to their goal.

The aircraft has a wingspan that is wider than a 737, but weighs very light (about 1000 pounds, or a grand piano), to allow it to stay aloft for as long as possible. Power usage is equivalent to about three hairdryers (5000 watts).

A ground crew is stationed to direct the aircraft. While it is mostly self sufficient, crew can determine heading, altitude, airspeed, or even a GPS route. Takeoff and landing are completed automatically.

Facebook continues to develop and progress Aquila.

The drone remained in the air for over 90 minutes an an altitude of about 2100 feet for its first flight.
