Final United 747 Flights Announced

Chicago- Today United Airlines finalized their plans for the final flights operated by their Boeing 747s. The United 747 fleet has always been important for the airline; they have operated the aircraft type since 1970, when it operated California to Hawaii routes.

The final international flight operated by a United 747 will be Seoul, South Korea to San Fransisco on October 29, 2017. The flight, UA892, leaves ICN at 16:45 and arrives in SFO at 11:25 the same day (due to timezones you arrive earlier then departure).

About a week later, the last commercial service by a United 747 will occur on November 7th on a flight from San Fransisco to Honolulu. The flight will be dubbed the ‘Friend Ship’, the name of the original United 747. UA747 will be a very special flight with a retro experience as described in today’s press release:

The journey will begin with a gate celebration at 9 a.m. local time at San Francisco International Airport, featuring a Boeing 747 gallery, remarks from United employees and executives, as well as refreshments. The flight will depart San Francisco International Airport at 11 a.m. local time, landing at Honolulu International Airport at 2:45 p.m. local time. Upon landing in Honolulu, local employees will welcome the aircraft with final festivities to close out the historic day.

As of the writing of this post during the afternoon of September 18th, UA892 is still available to book while UA747 appears to be already sold out.

Overall, this marks a bitter sweet end to an aircraft that served United Airlines through almost five decades. United joins a number airlines, like Delta and EVA Air, which choose the end of 2017 to retire this iconic aircraft. With airlines going for more efficient twin engine aircraft, the age of the Jumbo Jet, at least in passenger service, is nearing an end.

United also tweeted out a short video in conjunction with today’s announcement:
