Lego® released the BIONICLE theme in 2001 after Lego® wanted to create a storyline that would appeal to more customers. When released, it became a smash hit in both the US and Europe, earning the most profits for a theme at that time. It led a successful line until 2010 until it was discontinued and replaced with the Hero Factory theme that has been active since.

Lego® has announced that it will be re-releasing the theme in 2015. The story will be different form the original, but feature familiar characters. The new BIONICLE characters will also use parts introduced in the Hero Factory line.
