A big surprise on the new 12″ MacBook was that there was only one port (other than the headphone jack). That was the new USB-C port.
The single port can preform many tasks:
- Charge your MacBook
- Provide power out
- Transfer data between your MacBook and other devices
- Connect video output such as HDMI, VGA, and DisplayPort
- Connect to other technologies such as Ethernet
Another big feature is that the USB-C port on the MacBook can support data transfer speeds at up to 5 Gbps (USB 3.1 Gen 1).
For charging, Apple made a new 29W power adapter with a USB-C port. The adapter and a 2 meter USB-C cable are included with the MacBook.
Apple has also crated three adapters for other connections:
USB-C to USB Adapter:
You can use it with basically anything that connects to a normal USB port:
- Portable flash drive
- Hard Drive
- Digital Camera
- Powered USB 3 hub
- USB to Ethernet adapter
- USB to Lightning Cable for charging and syncing your iPhone, iPad, or iPod
USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter:
With this adapter you can do three things at once:
- Charge your MacBook
- Connect to other standard USB (USB-A) devices or hubs
- Connect your MacBook to external HDMI video devices such as a TV, projector, or display.
USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter:
With this adapter you can also do three things simultaneously:
- Charge your MacBook
- Connect to other standard USB (USB-A) devices or hubs
- Connect your MacBook to external VGA video devices such as a TV, projector, or display.
To conclude, the USB-C is a great new innovation with great power and is the perfect decision for the ultra thin MacBook. Keep in mind that USB-C isn’t exclusive to Apple and will be used on other computer in the future.
