World’s Longest Airliner Route

After the post on the world’s longest Dreamliner route, I decided to post the longest overall route in the world, not depending on aircraft type. Qantas holds the longest route on its flight from Dallas, Texas to Sydney, Australia. This flight is an astonishing 8,577 miles long (13,804 kilometers, 7,454 nautical miles).

QF 7 departs Sydney at 1:10 pm and arrives at Dallas at 1:45 pm the same day. The flight isn’t 35 minutes long, it’s actually 15:35 hours long. This is because the plane flies over the International Date Line on its way over the Pacific Ocean.

QF 8 departs Dallas 10:15 pm and arrives back in Sydney two days later at 6:05 am. This makes the flight time a long 16:50 hours. The double change of dates is once again because of the International Date Line, but this time the effect adds a day.

The Airbus a380 was chosen to fly the route. It was previously flown by a Boeing 747-438, but it had to make a stopover in Brisbane, Australia on the way back to Sydney  because the 747-438 held less fuel. The a380 offers great comfort for the travelers and includes a new first class. Qantas was the first airline to operate the Super Jumbo to Dallas, but Emirates stared a380 service between Dubai and Dallas just two days later.
