Boeing and Qatar Airways Announce Large Fleet Order

Boeing and Qatar announced on October 7, 2016 a major deal that includes a significant amount of aircraft as well as a signed Letter of Intent for more aircraft.

Qatar ordered two-aisle aircraft consisting of 30 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners as well as 19 Boeing 777-300ERs. The total value at list prices is $11.7 billion USD.

Currently, Qatar Airways operates 84 Boeing aircraft consisting of Boeing 777s and 787s delivered the past nine years. The new order expands Qatar’s backlog of Boeing aircraft from 65 to 105, which includes 60 Boeing 777Xs.

“Boeing has proven to be a valuable partner, and today’s announcement is testament to our appreciation of the quality of their product and their dedication to providing world class customer service.”

– Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker

The airline’s relationship with Boeing was recently renewed in 2006, which has led to many milestones in the following years, such as the first operator in the Middle East of the 787 aircraft and the launch customer of the Boeing 777X.

A Letter of Intent was also signed at the announcement for up to 60 737 MAX 8s, valued at $6.9 billion USD at list prices.

The order and Letter of Intent not only serves as a testament to the success of the relationship between Boeing and Qatar, but also a possible consequence from recent engine problems with Qatar’s new Airbus A320 NEO fleet.
